Venturing into the Uncharted Waters of Smart Sensing
The ocean remains one of the last unexplored frontiers on Earth, and sensing within this environment is essential for addressing many of today’s most pressing challenges—from global issues like climate change and resource management to local needs such as modernizing fisheries and automating underwater infrastructure.
To achieve this, we require more than just underwater drones and robots; reliable communication and mapping technologies powered by acoustics are crucial. However, acoustic waves travel much more slowly than radio waves, and multipath interference—from direct waves and reflections off the sea surface and seabed—as well as Doppler effects, can significantly degrade signals.
Our team is addressing these challenges by developing core technologies for stable underwater communication and positioning, aiming to drive the future of ocean exploration, industry, and sustainable marine development.
