The Science of Sleep and Health Revealed by Molecular Mechanisms in the Brain
Comfortable waking and pleasant daytime activity are supported by sophisticated mechanisms that regulate sleep within the body. My research uses mice to investigate how this seemingly ordinary and daily phenomenon—sleep—is controlled at the neural and molecular levels in the brain. By examining fundamental questions from a microscopic perspective—such as why we become sleepy at roughly the same time every day and how the duration of nighttime sleep is determined—I aim to uncover mechanisms that contribute to the improvement of sleep quality. Ultimately, this work seeks to generate knowledge that will help individuals lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.
