Social Sculpture in Motion: Opening New Possibilities through Co-Creation
As a contemporary artist, I create primarily public art. Using discarded bicycles and other scrap metal sourced from local communities, I produce large-scale interactive sculptures that viewers can touch and set in motion. My creative process begins with dialogue with local residents and communities, incorporating local resources and collective memories into the conception of each work. Collaboration with artisans and engineers is central to my practice, enabling the realization of works that balance structural strength, stability, and aesthetic quality while allowing me to examine the process and value of co-creation. In addition, I founded Azuma Studio Co., Ltd. in Bando City, Ibaraki Prefecture, as a model for a “co-creation platform” where art and manufacturing intersect. This facility functions as an intermediate space between an artist’s studio and a factory, creating an environment where artists, artisans, engineers, and local residents can come together. Through this initiative, I aim to put the possibilities of collaborative creation into practice within our society.
