About Tsukuba Institute for Advanced Research (TIAR)

Message from the Director General Ignite curiosity. Explore the unknown. Create the future. The true joy of research lies in the process of relentless thinking and turning inspiration into reality.

Since its founding, the University of Tsukuba has continuously explored new academic frontiers and tackled global challenges, anchored in interdisciplinarity and international perspectives.
Contemporary society faces multifaceted challenges, such as energy crises, environmental degradation, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, and growing social disparities, all of which demand innovation beyond established paradigms.

To meet the demands of this era, TIAR was established as a platform to explore new frontiers of knowledge. Accordingly, we have launched three key initiatives to fully leverage the strengths of the University of Tsukuba.

First, the Jihatsu Research Unit has been established to foster an environment wherein promising early-career researchers and creatively driven mid-career scholars may fully devote themselves to their research activities. This initiative aspires to cultivate their progression into globally distinguished researchers.

Second, the Society and Science Research Unit assumes a pivotal role in reaffirming the societal significance of science and technology, while narrowing the gap between scientific research and the public.

Finally, we designate our Frontier Research Centers as participating organizations to further develop the academic fields that represent the University of Tsukuba’s strengths.

By consolidating these three systems within TIAR, leading researchers in participating organizations will provide intellectual leadership for early- and mid-career researchers. In addition, cutting-edge research centers will generate new research themes informed by societal and interdisciplinary perspectives. Through dialogue with society, this structure fosters a virtuous cycle in which academic inquiry contributes to the resolution of social challenges and enhances Japan’s overall international competitiveness.
